Chapter 39.

Elinor and Marianne were invited by the Palmers to Cleveland, due to the insistence of Mrs Jennings, they decided to accept the invitation. Once they were at Cleveland, Colonel Brandon visited them and asked Elinor to inform Edward that he is prepared to give him a position at the Delaford rectory. While Elinor and Colonel Brandon were talking about how Edward could lead a comfortable life, but he wasn't able to afford a wife, Mrs. Jennings, who was observing the conversation, she concluded that they look nice as a couple and instead of talking about Edward they must be talking about a wedding.

Chapter 40.

Mrs. Jennings approaches Elinor soon after the Colonel's exit. She congratulates her and asks her many questions, which reveal her mistaken assumption that there is an engagement between Elinor and the Colonel. Elinor showed to Mrs. Jennings that she really appreciate Brandon's generosity towards Edward. When Edward arrives, Elinor tells him the good news, he is pleseantly surprised.

Elinor goes off to visit Fanny Dashwood, who has not been feeling well since the news of Edward and Lucy's engagement. She is greeted at the door by John Dashwood, who shares the news that Robert Ferrars will inherit his mother's estate in place of his brother. Just then, Robert Ferrars arrives and expresses his pity for his older brother. John leaves them to inform his wife of Elinor's presence, and Fanny Dashwood, upon receiving Elinor, expresses her regret that the Dashwood sisters will be leaving town so soon.
